At this point, I was accustomed quite a bit with charcoal, but still learning how to use it, I think I just got a new charcoal pencil, to be able to draw finer details, like the strands of hair. As with most of the charcoal drawings I made so far, I try to add a smoke-y element to it, either the background itself, or the details being lost in a sand-like appearance. In this case, it was the background. The goal here was to capture the general idea of the photo, focus on the big picture, and worry less about specific details. It is a lesson for myself in understanding faces and movement from the big light blocks, it teaches me things about my drawing and myself. Hopefully, it does the same for you.
